FA planning Team GB friendlies
Wed 26th Oct 2011 | Club & Country Competitions
The men's and women's teams are competing as GB in the Olympics for the first time since 1972, and the Football Association are understood to be planning a pre-tournament event which would see both sides playing friendlies at the same venue on a Saturday in July ahead of the Games.
The matches would have to take place outside London and in a venue not being used for the Olympic football tournament - Villa Park, for example, would be a strong contender.
Each match would be one of two pre-tournament friendlies for the British men's and women's sides, which are being managed by Stuart Pearce and Hope Powell respectively.
The issue of how any income from television rights would be split is also one that has to be settled, and discussions are planned between the FA, the British Olympic Association and London 2012 organisers.
Players from all home nations will be asked next month to confirm their availability for selection but the squads are not likely to be announced until the beginning of July, after the Euro 2012 finals.
The FA have softened their original position that no players would play in both Euro 2012 and the Olympics, after representations by Pearce.
Consultations will have to take place with the clubs as, following successful legal action by Barcelona in 2008, there is no FIFA obligation for clubs to release their players for the Olympic tournament.
The squads have to be announced by July 8 and kitted out by July 16.
