Rangers Charity Foundation Presents UNICEF With £50K Donation

Rangers Chairman Craig Whyte, Manager Ally McCoist and midfield star Jamie Ness has presented UNICEF with a cheque for £50,000 from the Rangers Charity Foundation as part of the Foundation’s continuing commitment to fund the reconstruction and equipping of seven vital health centres in Togo, West Africa.

The Foundation is working with UNICEF, the world’s leading children’s organisation, as part of an initial three year partnership agreement which has seen the Foundation donate £250,000 to date to UNICEF projects. The current initiative in Togo is underway, with this latest instalment of money renovating the health care centres, as well as creating bore holes and latrines with hand washing facilities.  Staff are also being trained to recognise and treat common, easily-treatable illnesses which are currently life threatening for many Togolese. 

The provision of clean water and toilets for each community and access to basic health care will save thousands of lives. More than one in ten children in Togo does not reach their fifth birthday.  The Rangers Charity Foundation project will ensure that more children survive and will have a direct impact on the health and wellbeing of 125,000 children and their families in the region.

Ally McCoist commented: “I am delighted to present this cheque as part of our ongoing work with UNICEF to create a healthier and happier future for the children of Togo.  The Rangers fans have been tremendous in their support for the Charity Foundation, which has made this incredible project possible, and I believe we can all be very proud of what we have achieved collectively with UNICEF.”

Julie Weston, Deputy Executive Director for UNICEF UK commented: “UNICEF is extremely grateful for another really generous donation from The Rangers Foundation. This will help fund the Foundation’s chosen project to rebuild health centres in Togo and make sure many more children have safe water and toilets so that they can grow into healthy adults and maybe even become Rangers fans!

“The Rangers and UNICEF health centres are well on the way to completion and we look forward to seeing these life saving clinics in action very soon.”
