FA to abstain from voting in FIFA presidential election

The Football Association has agreed to abstain in the vote for the Presidency of FIFA next month.
In what is a clear message to world football’s governing body, FIFA, the FA board, led by chairman David Bernstein, said that the they would support neither Blatter or Bin Hammam in the leadership race.
The decision comes after former FA chairman and England World Cup 2018 bid leader, Lord Triesman accused some FIFA executive committee members of demanding bribes in exchange for votes during the World Cup bidding process.
Bernstein said in a statement; “There are a well-reported range of issues both recent and current which, in the view of The FA board, make it difficult to support either candidate.
“The FA values its relationships with its international football partners extremely highly.
“We are determined to play an active and influential role through our representation within both UEFA and FIFA.
“We will continue to work hard to bring about any changes we think would benefit all of international football.”
The FA has launched an investigation in to the accusations made by Triesman amidst growing calls for more transparency with FIFA.
Blatter faces a leadership battle from Qatari Mohamed Bin Hammam, with the vote to decide who will be President due on 1 June.
