Sir Trevor Brooking to open new sports facility

Local people in the Ilkeston area are getting ready to celebrate the opening of a new £586,000 3rd generation (3G) artificial grass pitch.

The pitch will be officially opened by Sir Trevor Brooking CBE, The Football Association’s Director of Football Development at 11.30am on Wednesday 30 March at Kirk Hallam Community Technology and Sports College, Godfrey Drive, Kirk Hallam, Ilkeston, Derbyshire DE7 4HH.

The new pitch will allow partner clubs, including Ilkeston Town Juniors FC, West Hallam Juniors FC, Stanton Ilkeston FC and Sandiacre Town FC to train and play on a state-of-the-art, pitch throughout the year, regardless of the weather conditions.

The College has appointed a Community and Football Development Manager who, along with his three assistants, will be making sure that a well planned football development programme is carried out and that the facility has maximum usage with careful maintenance to provide a long lasting community facility.

The project was funded with the help of a £314,300 grant from the Football Foundation. Funded by the Premier League, The FA, and the Government via Sport England, the Football Foundation is the nation’s largest sports charity. Launched in July 2000, the Foundation has so far supported around 8,000 community sports projects worth £947m.

John Warrington from the College said: “The investment in the pitch from the Football Foundation and the Department for Education, alongside the new Sports Hall funded by Derbyshire County Council means that our students and the community partners now have fantastic facilities for training and changing.”

Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “We are delighted that Kirk Hallam College students and the wider local community will have access to these fantastic new facilities and commend their staff and the Derbyshire County FA for their hard work in making this happen.”

“This is the latest example of thousands of projects across the country that the Football Foundation is supporting with money provided by our funding partners the Premier League, The FA and Government. In Derbyshire alone we have supported 125 projects worth £13.7m.”
