FSF petition to reintroduce safe-standing areas

The Football Supporters Federation (FSF) have launched an online petition today in their long running campaign to reintroduce safe standing areas in football grounds.
The national supporters’ organisation for all football fans which represents more than 180,000 individual fans and affiliate members throughout England and Wales is calling for the government to rethink its ban on standing areas in football grounds.
The FSF says there is a large body of support to reintroduce standing areas nearly 22 years after it was banned following the Hillsborough disaster which claimed the lives of 96 Liverpool supporters, the families of who remain vehemently opposed to the idea.
But the FSF believes Safe Standing Campaign is not just about those who prefer to stand. They argue that by giving supporters the choice, everyone benefits. They are hoping the government will relax the law governing ground safety to allow clubs the choice to create safe standing areas inside their stadiums.
Currently all Premier League and Championship clubs are required to have all-seater stadiums whilst UEFA regulations stipulate that European competitions must be played in all-seated stadiums.
Monday saw the first ever round-table meeting on the issue between the Football Supporters' Federation and the football authorities, government and police. However, Sports Minister, Hugh Robertson admitted that no government would back the change at present.
However, it’s understood that Robertson had agreed at least to look at any strong evidence to show modern terracing can be safe, is able to be policed, and that there is a widespread demand from supporters.
Once closed, the petition will be handed to the relevant government and football authorities for their consideration.
