UEFA to finalise TV rights centralisation
Mon 21st Mar 2011 | UEFA
UEFA, European football’s governing body, is expected to finalise the arrangements for the centralisation of the media rights to the European qualifiers of the FIFAWorld Cup and the European Championships at its executive committee meeting in Paris today and tomorrow,
According to TV Sports Market, UEFA has projected it will earn almost £1 billion over a four-year cycle, taking in the qualifiers for one World Cup and one European Championship.
This compares with about £590 million that the federations earn at present with the new scheme expected to come into force in 2014 for the qualifiers for Euro 2016.
However, the English FA has expressed its concern that new deal would reduce its earnings from the centralisation of rights. In a move to dispel any fears, UEFA has guaranteed that no federation will earn less than it does under the present system, in which the rights are handled by the individual federations.
England are reported to earn around £30 million a year from the new deal but fear that the loss of control over the sale of their rights will lead it to overall reduction in their income.
The TV rights to England games are currently bundled in with those for the FA Cup and were worth £425million domestically, and a further £150million in overseas contracts, when the FA signed a four-year deal with ITV and Setanta in 2007
UEFA is expected to announce that all of its 53 member federations have signed up to the scheme. However, it is thought that federations will be able to opt out of some parts of it.
