Walsall FC Banks’s Stadium put up for sale

Tue 15th Mar 2011 | Football Stadiums & Facilities

Walsall Football Club was yesterday informed by its Landlord Suffolk Life Annuities Limited of their intention to sell their freehold interest in the Banks's Stadium site.

The group that owns the stadium have not said how much they are asking for the ground, but it’s understood that the Saddlers were charged £466,752 in rent last year.

A statement on the club’s website read  “The Club would like to take this opportunity to assure all Employees, Supporters, Sponsors and Commercial Partners that this does not affect The Walsall Football Club Limited in any way and that the Club will continue to operate as normal.”

Walsall, who moved to stadium in 1990, has a secure lease on the Banks's Stadium site stating “a change in the ownership of the Freehold of the site will purely reflect a change of Landlord.”

Reassuring their fans the statement also said; “For the avoidance of doubt it is the freehold of the Banks's Stadium site that is for sale and not the Football Club. The ownership of the Club and Directors' shareholdings remain unchanged. All contractual and commercial commitments the Club has also remain unaffected.

Speaking to the Express & Star newspaper, supporters group Unity admitted they were cautious but hope it can lead to a positive change.

They said: “Unity welcomes the news today that the freehold of Walsall FC has become available to purchase.

“Last season we campaigned for the return of the freehold to Walsall FC and we remain cautious as to the ambition of any would-be landlord but we hope this is a progressive step in the transformation of our football club.”
